Review written by Anteneh Gebre

Before this review, I merely heard of Ludo, I'd never actually heard their music before. The first thing that came to my mind by the time the first chorus of the opener "Too Tired To Wink" was OKGO meets The All American Rejects. Although, unlike either of those bands typical work, this song featured an almost breakdown after the chorus' & a pretty nice guitar solo towards the end. After that happened, Motion City Soundtrack definitely came to mind. But enough about the comparisons because this record is pretty decent. Musically, there isn't too many original sounds on this record. If this was some sort of guessing game instead of a review where I'd listen to a record with everything but vocals & try to guess who made it, my first guess on Ludo's third full record, entitled Prepare the Preparations, would've been Plain White T's. My second would've been "Seriously, PLAIN WHITE T'S." That's not to say PTP is totally lacking originality. Lead singer Andrew Volpe's voice is very distinct from any others I've ever heard. Another thing definitely interesting about this release is that it features a lot of acoustic guitar, which isn't to common for many bands in Ludo's genre. Most usually have a closing track that is acoustic but Ludo use the instrument so often you'd think they had a member who specifically there to play it. Overall, Prepare the Preparations is a pretty regular pop-rock/pop-punk/powerpop (yeah, i know. sub genre's can ironically be specific). I can honestly say that if it wasn't for Volpe's demented sounding vocals (especially on "Rotten Town", which should be finding it's way to a Tim Burton movie any day now), this would just be another mediocre pop band record. If you're a Ludo fan, you probably want to hang me. If you're someone who listened to the record with an open mind & know anything about pop rock bands, your review will probably be similar to mine.

Review written by Nathan Mahlmeister

A step in the right direction is what comes to mind when I listen to this EP. It is no secret the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’s 2nd Full Length on virgin, lonely road, was a disappointment. Some would go as far as to say it was a catastrophe though I didn’t think it was that bad. I didn’t mind the more pop punk less hardcore direction they were heading. Well apparently RJA did and they parted ways with their label Virgin and have put out this EP DIY style. This is good news if you are fan of the first Red Jumpsuit Apparatus CD don’t you fake it. The heavy hitting fast paced guitars are back. The screams are also back and used to an even greater extent than on DYFI. I like the addition of more screams. It works well with their style of music and hope they keep them on their next full length. Ronnie Winter does a decent job on the vocals front. He sounds no different than he did on the first 2 cds which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it’s not a good thing either. He doesn’t really do anything to differentiate himself from any other average front man out there. The first song to me doesn’t seem to really fit on this record. I like the insanely fast guitars and screamed verses but it comes out sounding almost like a straight punk song. I like it but it just doesn’t fit. Choke the 2nd song on the CD fairs better and is also my favorite song. It is the catchiest song on the CD though I think the chorus. “I hope you choke on the letters that you wrote” gets repeated too much but that might be the point. Even so with lines like “Sing it like last time but every line ends with a rhyme, You’ll get great reviews. But I refuse to be reused.” it’s easy to see how much control virgin had over them. Though its not just the label winter takes a shot at. In the next song Don’t Hate he takes one at his critics. “I don’t sing enough for you, I don’t scream enough for you I’m not anything” It has almost a metal feel to it especially with the intro. It’s a decent song but I think it could use a better hook. Those words can be used to describe the rest of the EP. The rest of the songs are all pretty good just not all that memorable. They don’t really stick in your head like False Pretenses did. They seem to just be missing something from that first CD. The good news is that it’s just an EP and it is by no means bad. It’s also heads and shoulders above lonely road. It has me excited to see what they can do on their upcoming full length due to be released next year. If you’re a fan of the old RJA pick this up just don’t expect to be blown away.
Favorite Songs:Choke
